Pay Per Click Campaign Terminology
Just like we discussed in search engine optimization (SEO) Rules of Engagement, pay per click also has a very military "feel" to it. Internet marketing is adversarial - you are vying for the same customers as your competition. It's not much different from more traditional marketing, except that it's lots easier to track results.
Internet marketers talk about campaigns, strategies and tactics. If you're familiar with the military, play chess, or participate in sports chances are you understand the terminology. If that's you, just skip this part. But, if you don't know which is what and how it all fits together to help your business, keep reading!
Let's say that you have a web site and you wish to increase online sales. That's a great objective, but it's not measurable and may be interpreted in different ways than what you intended by others who don't have your vision. If I get one more sale this year, that's an increase - but is that what you had in mind? Probably not.
You must first define and commit to a measurable, reasonable and achievable goal. For instance your goal may be to increase online sales by 50% during the next 12 months. That's a pretty concrete objective. Now you have something to shoot for and you can tell when you've been successful. A nebulous goal may help you feel better about your efforts, but it won't provide the satisfaction of achievement.
Once you have defined where you're going (your goal) you can figure out how you're going to get there (your strategy or plan) and what methods you'll use to make it happen (your tactics).
